CU FLIERS OFF TO THE OLYMPIC TRIALS
Tyler McGill of Storm Aquatics and Payton Johnson, formerly of Champaign County Aquachiefs, now representing Club Wolverine both achieved Olympic Trial Qualifying standards in the 100 meter butterfly at championship meets this summer. Tyler, swam a 54.95 to win the Junior National Championship meet in Irvine California setting a new Junior National Meet Record. Payton's time of 1:01.75 was achieved at the ConocoPhillips National Championships/USA Team Trials where she was a member of the Women's and Combined Team Championships. Both swimmers will be competing with their collegiate teams this season, Tyler joins Auburn as a freshman; Payton, who as a freshman was on the Dean's list for Engineering and a Big Ten Champion in the 400 yard medley relay, will be doing her sophomore year at the University of Michigan. CCAEDC wishes both swimmers luck and hope one or both will join the ranks of the two former Champaign County Olympians, Bill Mullikan, USA 1960, and Michael Alexandrov, 2004, Bulgaria, both of whom were breaststrokers by the way, and represent us in Beijing!
If you have news about any current or former local swimmers you would like posted please contact us at cc50meterpool@yahoo.com and we'll see you poolside!
CURRENT CCAEDC ACTIVITIES
The most important strengths and core competencies of CCAEDC are love, knowledge, and a long heritage of success in swimming. The community of swimmers is large, loyal, and very interested in seeing this project succeed. A major strength is our understanding of how to create a state-of-the-art competitive facility successful. We participated in the 2006 Build A Pool Conference presented by USA Swimming in Colorado Springs, Colorado. USA Swimming offers over $85,000 of in kind services for aquatic facilities development. Our group includes coaches, officials, parents, swimmers, and politicians. We will pursue grants as well as private donations.
We have a web site and a newsletter, which provides a venue to educate the community to the benefits of aquatic health, safety, recreation, and competition. We will educate the general public to our State, National, and Olympic Champions and Record Holders and coaches that have been part of our wider heritage.
FUTURE PLANS
Initially, we want to involve the community in this effort through planned fundraisers, conferences, and reunions. These will crystallize public commitment and will promote the development of the University of Illinois Natatorium. As part of this effort, we will bring former community, high school, USS, Masters, and collegiate swimmers and divers together to form a unified and supportive aquatic group.
We will pursue an aggressive and focused capital campaign. Through strict fiscal planning and guided programs, we will seek corporate and private donors, who share our vision. Informally and formally, the community is very interested in seeing this project succeed.

CCAEDC wants to unite its strength in swimming with the University of Illinois to bring a state-of-the-art natatorium facility with an aquatics program to the community. In order to implement this strategy we will do the following:
The Champaign community, which includes the local USA Swimming club, has recently lost their 50 meter training and competition venue. This was the location of many state age group and senior championships, lap swimming for all ages, and an economic source for the community and local swim clubs.
At the USA Swimming 2006 Build a Pool Conference, it was noted that communities throughout the United States are facing similar issues with having to replace pools, which were built during the 1960’s and 1970’s; therefore, there is need for quality facilities to be constructed throughout the country. In addition, the older facilities were not developed to support themselves through programming. Because of this need, there are resources available to help communities to plan and promote the construction of new facilities. We have also reviewed the facility standards and needs of FINA and USA Swimming and new pool would have to be constructed to comply.
Private Wine Tasting
September 10, 2006
The Corkscrew Wine Emporium
Vine Street, Urbana
CCAEDC brought its message to the swimming community with a Wine Tasting at the Corkscrew Wine Emporium on September 10th, 2006. Drew Hagen, the current manager, known for his community efforts provided wines at cost as well as the great event location, and the group expresses our thanks for his support. The tasting featured a selection of wines that you might use for a three-course meal and dessert which were selected by Susan Vimr, Board Vice President, and avid wine aficionado. The evening was kept lively by the pouring efforts and insightful wine critiques by Eric Vimr and Stan Johnson.
A presentation by Board President, Suzanne Trupin, introduced the other board members, as well as the Advisory Board Members present to the aquatic supporters. She spoke to the group about the efforts to bring a competitive 50-meter pool venue to the community. Advisory Board Member, Congressman Tim Johnson, conveyed his support for the group’s efforts to provide lap swimming space telling us of his recent difficulties in trying to swim for fitness when home, given the current pool time crisis in town. The University of Illinois Swimming Coaches Sue Novitsky and Steve Farnau had just returned from a team-bonding trip to Allerton Park. They report the team is in good spirits although, like some of the current high school and club swimmers, they are scrambling for pool time. Supporter’s suggestions for possible pool venues in our community were discussed.
Future Wine Tastings are planned, so start your holiday wine-shopping list and get ready to buy at the next CCAEDC fundraiser. Contact us for more information.

Vision Statement
Facility Mission Statement
Executive Summary
The Envisioned Natatorium
The Envisioned Sculpture Memorial
Project Components with Budget
Envisioned Location
We want to develop an aquatic education facility that can serve the entire Champaign County community. To this end we are considering several potential partnerships including the University of Illinois. A state of the art competition, training and water fitness center could benefit many groups in the community, those in currently organized aquatic programs as well as the community at large. We believe that the potential for partnering with the University Illinois gives us the best opportunity for success in achieving this goal.
The Mission of The Champaign County Aquatic Education and Development Corporation (CCAEDC) is to:
The Champaign County Aquatic Education and Development Corporation (CCAEDC) was formed to help develop a state-of-the-art natatorium to enhance the sport of competitive swimming at the University of Illinois and in Champaign County. The group is a 501(c) (3) corporation that can aid in the plan by bringing the current and former aquatic community together by helping design a facility that can be self sustaining, by raising money towards the facility, and by supporting the facility through its members participating in the program. We have done extensive market research into the types of aquatic facilities that are similar and successful by visiting these, by bringing in a wide variety of experts as consultants, and by participating with the United States Swimming Build a Pool Conference.
There is a great need for a competition venue in our community, state, competitive swimming and diving region and section, as well as at the University of Illinois. The University has no suitable diving facilities, no pool space for men’s swimming and diving, no pool space to hold a Big Ten Championship. The plan discusses the competitions that can be offered by this facility that will in turn support the facility and our community financially.
There are many types of aquatic programs that are not currently offered in Champaign-Urbana, and there are many that are under participated in because of lack of suitable water time. This plan proposes the types of programs that can be developed to support the eventual facility.
Champaign-Urbana has had Olympic, National, Conference, Junior National, YMCA National, and State High School Champions in the sport of swimming. It is the group’s mission to continue the legacy of excellence in competitive swimming in our area. We hope this facility will allow the other competitive water sports to flourish as well.
According to the Chicago Tribune on Sunday May 7th, Section 3, page 12: Although there are many existing facilities, an Aquatics Complex would have to be built to accommodate the Olympics in 2016. This would house competition for swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, and the modern pentathlon’s swimming portion. Tribune sports reporter Philip Hersh said “A main pool would leave the greatest civic legacy of any new venue. Temporary pools could be used for diving, water polo, and synchro.” Clearly this addresses the great need in our state for a state of the art natatorium.
The plan itself has a competition pool with a dotted I formation and seating, a large training and teaching facility, therapy, and play areas. All will be designed with a variety of uses in mind. The natatorium will also have a large memorial to those who have contributed to aquatic athletic excellence in our community.
We hope to partner with the University of Illinois. This is a preliminary business plan that will need funding for a feasibility study to further evaluate.
The centerpiece of the aquatic program will be the aquatic facility. In the section that follows we present components of the facility we envision. Our architect consultants assure us that the inclusion of these components would make this facility functional and able to self sustain.
